Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a technique of applying pressure to reflex areas on the hands and/or feet.  These areas correspond to and mirror a reflection of the entire body.  The right foot corresponds to the right half of the body and the left foot to the left side of the body.  It is the same with the hands.  The theory of reflexology massage is that the organs, nerves, glands and other parts of the body are all represented or connected by these areas founds in the hands and feet.

Reflexology has been found to exist for over 5000 years, dating back in time to writings ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Japanese civilizations.  A “rediscovery” of this therapy was brought into the Western world by a Dr. William Fitzgerald in the early 1900’s.

Here are some great resources to learn about this powerful healing modality:

What is done in a reflexology session?

A hand or foot reflexology massage session can take anywhere between a half hour to an hour.  The practitioner will apply gentle pressure to the hands and feet which stimulates the body’s central nervous system creating improved circulation and relaxation.  Various hand, thumb and finger techniques are employed throughout a session.   A client will very typically be on a reclining chair so that the practitioner can have easy access to the feet.  A client should be very relaxed at the end of the session and should as communicate how the pressure feels that is applied throughout.
